Wahey Hey Hey! Posted on 09/11/2003 at 18:00 GMT
We made it! We did it! I just can't believe it! In fact, neither of us can believe it!

And to think that I was convinced that we would be flying back from Italy, having left the car there for scrap!

Well, it just goes to show that a £300 car can do the 3000 mile trip, and come back stronger than ever. That's 10 miles for every £1 spent - which is a bit of a bargain.

Oh, hang on - I'm forgetting the millions of squids spent on petrol and tolls (our ill-tuned engine cost us an arm and leg in petrol). I'll be totting up the totals spent on petrol and tolls tomorrow - but let's just say that Mark and I have written off this trip financially and leave it at that. We're just going to have to love the taste of budget beans for a while, that's all.

Yesterday saw us finally reach Angleterre - all the minis caught the same ferry back which was something of an incredible experience. The noise of 80-odd minis bedecked with air horns and klaxons (alongside Gina's puny little beep beep) was deafening. I think people in Aberdeen heard us arrive!

We got a police escort all the way from the ferry to Ashford which made us all feel like royalty. Mark and I felt especially emotional due to the amount of shit we've successfully come through. As usual, Gina attracted the attentions of kids and small animals whilst the more serious coopers etc caught the adults, but at least we make people smile!

So, we're home. You might think that after Ashford the journey back to Bournemouth was a straight-forward affair...

Tsk. tsk. You haven't been taking this in have you? This is Gina we're talking about you fools!

No, the journey back wasn't as easy as you may think. Torrential rain managed to spoil our plans of a hero's return, and instead saw us having to leave the motorways for the country roads all the way back due to the fact that all the spray from passing trucks managed to turn poor Gina into a moving swimming pool.

I knew we were going to have problems when my pedal foot started to feel a little soggy - but before I could do anything about it, the entire cabin had sprung a million leaks, and Mark had already started to blow up his water wings.

For a British made car, designed for Britain - the Mini is absolutely useless in wet weather. Slight design flaw there chaps.

So we finally managed to get home after limping back through the country roads. Our return to Bournemouth saw us blasting out 'Self-Preservation Society' to the bemused and confused residents of Westbourne, but it made us feel better at the very least.

So we're home. Yah-boo suckas to all of you who said we'd never make it (which I think covers pretty much the entire population of Earth, as well as several other neighbouring star systems capable of sustaining life).

We'd like to give our love and thanks to everyone we met on the Job - the whole fantastic thing about the job is the people you meet, and everyone there was fanastic!

But its not all folks! I've got a lot of work to do adding lots of the photos we took on the job - as well as telling about some of the other teams and their stories - some of which made ours seem a little tame.

Stay tuned - more mini based hot action to come!
